Human cloning: what is it that forces scientists to believe in its majesty? Proponents of science believe that human cloning is the fait accompli of everything science related; the idea that a human can be completely replicated is remarkable, and scientists cherish the concept of such hardwork in stem cell research and the beneficial results which are derived from it. On the other hand, those who oppose cloning are against its affects on society. They feel its harmful and something that could eventually cause catastrophic results. Do you support the idea that scientists should in fact use their knowledge and power to try and enhance the world by cloning humans, or do you agree that scientists should not be allowed to play the role of God and that their knowledge and power could in fact bring harm to the world?

Personally, it all depends on how the cloning process develops. If the world decides to go along the lines of using it to help repopulate endangered species, then yes, I approve of it. HOWEVER, if the world wishes to use cloning as a means for power (much like Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones), or for personal gain like the 2005 film, The Island (people would pay to get themselves cloned so that they can harvest the clone's organ for themselves whenever they needed it), then I'd DEFINITELY say no.

First off may I say awesome reference to Star Wars and second I agree that it is circumstantial. I do believe though that if cloning was used for one purpose like repopulating species than it would inevitably be used for the other purpose of creating a never ending army. Though I wonder if it is our job to repopulate species. If we believe in evolution, than the fittest survive and in this case, the animals should not be repopulated. Science in this case is still playing God, choosing which animals live and die.
ReplyDeleteCloning is an extraordinary achievement. To waste it by not using it is almost a crime in of itself. However, complete human cloning is definitely a potential threat to the world. Anyone play Hitman Blood Money? I just finished it the other day.
ReplyDeleteFunny how most people don't care if it's about cloning sheep, but almost everyone has something to say if it's human.
Playing God is a pretty vague phrase; poachers do it all the time. Poor polar bears :[
Cloning animals is one thing, but cloning humans... what could the world possibly achieve from doing that? I don't think anything good will come out from cloning humans, just look what I said earlier. Because of the fact that they were artificially produced, they're only good for tools of war, or to harvest their organs.
ReplyDeleteYeah I just watched Episode 2 on Friday and it was definitely weird seeing all those clones. The Kamino cloners made about a million clones. I agree with Cosmo on how everyone freaks out about science interfering with humans. I think it is funny how scientists can test on mice and such indiscriminately, but not humans. Also people say to take care of those less fortunate, yet we treat other animals as indispensable.
ReplyDeleteI agree poor polar bears :(
Some scientists are trying to do [partial] cloning, I believe. This makes it so that they only grow the organs they need, instead of the organism as a whole, which is pretty cool and bypasses all the ethical issues.
